Black Widow Spider
Common in all parts of Nevada. Bites on humans are from female spider protecting their egg sack. They have a distinctive orange-red marking on the underside of Spider in shape of an hourglass.
Argentine Ant
Approximately 1/8 inch long and infests both landscapes and homes. Prefers mostly sweets. Ant colonies can be very large with multiple queens forming “super colonies.
Fire Ant
Commonly found in Southern Nevada. They get their name from their ability to inflict painful bites and stings. Fire ants prefer food with high protein content but will feed on almost anything plant or animal.
Silverfish/Firebrat
Flat bodied insects that are broad near the head and tapered at the abdomen. They have three long slender appendages from the rear of the body that are very distinctive. Silverfish are silver-grey while Firebrats are more mottled in color. Both prefer to feed on starchy and protein rich materials.
House Fly
Most common flies found in and around homes. They are potential carriers of disease organisms, having been found to harbor over 100 pathogenic organisms. While house flies can migrate up to 20 miles, most stay within 1-2 miles.
Fruit Flies
Primarily attracted to fruits and vegetables and those fermenting because of the yeast. Adult females can lay approximately 500 eggs which can hatch in about 30 hours. They live about 8-10 days.
Honeybees
Almost all bees are Africanized on some level. They are the predominate strain of feral honeybees in Southern Nevada. Their nests are constructed of wax. Honeybees will swarm if the colony gets to large. Bees in a swarm are docile because they are not defending food or their young.
Scorpion
Scorpions are common throughout Nevada. They live from anywhere from 2-5 years. Scorpions give birth to live young, which the female carries on her back. They average about six molts before they become adults. Scorpions feed at night. During the day, they harbor in and under debris.
German Brown Cockroach
This cockroach is the most common cockroach found in Nevada. They are phototrophic (avoid light). This species has the highest reproductive potential with each female possibly laying up to 50 eggs.
Oriental Cockroach
Comonly known as, “waterbugs”, this species of cockroach is found primarily in dark moist places, such as in water meter boxes. This cockroach is found mostly outdoors and occasionally indoors.
Earwigs
Earwigs are general nocturnal feeders that infrequently are found indoors. They are noted by their flattened, elongated body with foreceplike cerci at the bottom.
House Mouse
This is the most common rodent found in the household. This mouse has very poor vision and is color-blind. However, it has keen senses of smell, taste, hearing, and touch. They usually only travel 10-30 feet from their nest.
